Persona 5 Helps Push SEGA’s Q1 Physical Sales Up as Digital Sales Decline

Sega Sammy has released its Q1 financial results, reporting an overall increase in net sales of 52 percent from the same period last year.

The Japanese holding company’s Entertainment Contents division, which video games form a part of, saw sales of ¥50.2 billion – an increase of 7 percent year-over-year. While physical video game sales were up 35 percent from last year (amounting to ¥14.4 billion), digital sales saw a decrease of 21 percent.

Most of the packaged game sales came from Sega’s back catalog, which contributed up to 71 percent in North America and Europe, and 73 percent in Japan. The increase in sales is thanks in part to the success of Atlus’ Persona 5, which released to critical acclaim worldwide and has shipped 1.5 million copies since its initial release in September 2016.

On the digital front, Sega reported “robust” sales for Phantasy Star Online 2, which recently celebrated its fifth anniversary.
