Now Loading: Is the Uncharted Series Over?

Is the Uncharted series over? That’s the question on the minds of many as Uncharted: The Lost Legacy releases this week. Naughty Dog’s series that made Nathan Drake a household name has now spanned a total of five console titles (with several handheld and mobile spin-offs to boot). So, is it time for Sony to move beyond the treasure tracking adventures that Uncharted is known for?

That’s why the question we posed in this week’s Now Loading was “should the Uncharted series end?”

Uncharted: The Lost Legacy is a fun addition to the consistently solid Uncharted franchise. While this entry may be quite a bit shorter than the main numbered games, that doesn’t mean the key components that constitute an Uncharted game aren’t just as present. Indeed, you’ll rarely see a game with this high of production values for only $39.99. Uncharted: The Lost Legacy is a tight, action-packed adventure in India, and a trip well worth taking.

I'd love to see a game based on the adventures of Drake's son or something based on Sully in his youth.

To me, Uncharted has always been about the characters, wrapping their internal and personal conflicts in the tapestry of a grand adventure. The bombastic set pieces are always exciting, leaving me on the edge of my seat for most of my playthrough, but it's the clear heart that Naughty Dog surges into every Uncharted game that makes them truly worthwhile. If Naughty Dog can find the right story to tell -- much as they did with The Lost Legacy -- I would be more than happy to see more characters explored. I don't want Uncharted back just for the sake of Uncharted. I want more Uncharted if there is a meaningful personal narrative to explore within its primary characters.

As someone that's not the biggest fan of the series, whether or not more Uncharted games come out doesn't really affect me either way. If they can expand on the Uncharted 'universe' and not make it crazy or contrived like say... the Metal Gear Solid games then why not make more? However, it seems as though the story is more or less done, so maybe they should try a new IP instead.

I'm fine with stories ending. It's so easy to fall back on a popular brand because dem monies doe, but I don't like it when stories are stretched just for the sake of the name brand. Case in point, Gears of War.

I would love to learn more about Sully and play a game based on his early exploits. If Drake has a grandson, maybe even a story based around him finding out about his grandfather's adventures and setting off on his own.

I'm all for more Uncharted games. That's a franchise teeming with compelling characters and I trust Naughty Dog has plenty of more spinoff ideas brewing should they decide to go back to the well.

I would be fine with it going away altogether, but I’d also be open to more games as long as Nathan Drake isn’t in a starring role. Show off other characters like a young Sully or the misadventures of Nate & Elena’s daughter (in what would hopefully be a non-violent game) instead. I’d be down for more treasure hunts, I just hope they don’t feel as formulaic as Uncharted 4 did.

As much as I adore the series, I have to agree with everyone else. I'm open to the idea of exploring new characters but not at the cost of the series losing its luster. Maybe ending Uncharted will make room for a fresh IP! I've seen some suggestions of Naughty Dog handing over the series to another studio. I'm a little apprehensive about that.
