Earlier this year, when Sony Interactive Entertainment Europe’s Jim Ryan offered up some reasons why they weren’t allowing cross-platform play between PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, he said, “to my knowledge, there is no live conversation ongoing at the moment” to enable it.
In a new gamescom interview with GameReactor, Aaron Greenberg, Head of Xbox Games Marketing, revealed that they’re in discussions with Sony, and Microsoft is hopeful they’ll be supportive of it:
Absolutely, yeah. We’re talking to Sony [about cross-play], we do partner with them on Minecraft and of course we would like to enable them to be part of that; one community, to unite gamers. So we’re talking to them and we’re hopeful that they’ll be supportive of it.
The Better Together Update for Minecraft, which enables cross-platform play on many platforms including Xbox One and Nintendo Switch, will be available this fall. In the FAQ, published back in July, Mojang said, “we are still in discussions with Sony about PlayStation [cross-play] and have nothing to confirm. We would love to work with Sony to bring players on PlayStation 4 into this ecosystem as well.”
Another possible reason why Sony isn’t allowing cross-play on PS4 with Minecraft has to do with the fact that you’ll need an Xbox Live account. “We needed a good system to connect everyone, and Xbox Live is a good system,” Mojang CEO Jonas Märtensson explained.
