Today, SEGA detailed what players can expect in Yakuza 6’s clan creation mode, and fans of Japanese pro wrestling are in for a nice treat.
Yakuza 6‘s clan creator mode – which plays out like a real-time strategy game – allows players to take some of their favorite characters from Yakuza and pit them against each other as leaders in Kiryu’s own clan.
You’ll be able to collect Common, Rare, and Super Rare characters. While the leaders and their clans will be guided by AI, there is a degree of skill involved: players will be able to utilize their leaders’ special skills to heal and buff their street armies or perform powerful strikes, influencing battles that take place on the streets of Kamurocho. We’ll also be planning some cool events post-launch around this fun minigame.
Once players upload their teams, the characters on-screen are controlled by Yakuza’s AI system. Players can then spend experience points they receive during the game to train the “leaders” of the clans. SEGA has announced that they will also be bringing in wrestlers from the New Japan Pro Wrestling company into the game mode. Additionally, players will be able to unlock characters in the game mode by entering 16-digit codes. Two of which are hidden in the PlayStation Blog post.

After getting my hands on Yakuza 6, I feel as if I’ll have a harder time enjoying Yakuza Kiwami when it releases later this year. It really is so much of an upgrade that it’ll be difficult going back to the more rigid gameplay that defined the series on PlayStation 3. The Song of Lifeproves that SEGA still can do a lot more with Yakuza going forward, as it has gotten new life thanks to the cutting-edge engine finally taking advantage of the more advanced hardware.
Yakuza 6: The Song of Life is set to launch on March 20, 2018.
