While it may not come as a big surprise, Naughty Dog has seemingly confirmed what many already thought: when The Last of Us Part II releases, Ellie will be the only playable character.
When asked about it during a behind-closed-doors session with the game (via IGN), co-lead game designer Richard Cambier tried to stay mysterious, saying that the company wasn’t going to confirm or deny anything. However, it was creative director Neil Druckmann who apparently spilled the beans, confirming that “Ellie is the only playable character in the game.”
Obviously, this is a bit of a departure from the last game, which saw you playing as Joel for a large portion of the game before briefly allowing you to take over as Ellie. Though many might not be happy with this, it does seem to make sense. Most of the early marketing and teases of the game have focused on Ellie, both with her growth as a character and her growth in the world of The Last of Us.
Even though this could be a misdirection (something which Naughty Dog has done in the past), making her the main focus of the story seemed inevitable, and not at all a bad thing. While we wait for more confirmation on just who you’ll be able to play as let us know if you’re okay with just controlling Ellie in the upcoming The Last of Us Part II, or if you’d rather play as someone else.
The Last of Us Part II is currently in development.
