Assassin’s Creed Is Taking Another Year off (Sort Of)

After Assassin’s Creed Syndicate underperformed somewhat, compared to its relatively high review scores, Ubisoft took an extra year with the previously annual series before dropping Assassin’s Creed Origins. It was very well received, but it was a bit surprising when Assassin’s Creed Odyssey was announced for this year at E3 2018. However, it seems like the year off strategy is still in play, as Ubisoft has confirmed 2019 will not see a new Assassin’s Creed.

Speaking to GameSpot at gamescom 2018, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot said, “We are not going to have a full-fledged Assassin’s next year.” Essentially, it was explained that the year off was applied to both Assassin’s Creed games in development at the same time, so the alternating teams that used to stagger their releases so a game could come out each year are basically doing the same thing, just with the added development time causing that year gap after both titles come out.

But what did Guillemot mean by “full-fledged?” There’s an answer to that too. While we won’t be seeing a spinoff, remaster, or some other non-core Assassin’s Creed content, we will be seeing support for Assassin’s Creed Odyssey run through 2019. As we’ve mentioned before, the game will be running on a pseudo-service model, so regular content updates of some sort will be coming to the game after it launches on October 5, 2018. These statements from Guillemot appear to be an extension of that.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey will be released on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on October 5, 2018.
