[Spoiler Warning] Whoops! Funko Pop Spoils New Marvel’s Spider-Man Costume

Part of the fun in a new Spider-Man game is discovering all the different costumes you can unlock through various means. There is is. It’s a black suit, but not the one you’d normally expect when you hear the words “black suit” and “Spider-Man” together. Instead, this costume appears to be a new variant of the Negative Zone Spider-Man costume, which itself has plenty of history spanning Marvel Comics history.

In its first appearance, Spider-Man’s costume automatically changed colors upon entering the negative zone. In more recent stories, this change was the direct result of a confrontation with Mr. Negative, which is appropriate considering that villain seems to be the primary, or early, antagonistic force in Marvel’s Spider-Man. This version is slightly different in appearance, with full white eyes and a black spider emblem on the chest. Typically those two are reversed, with the eyes black (save for a white outline) and the spider emblem a solid white.

Could this suit, with the decision to use it for merchandise, be plot-oriented rather than an unlockable? It’s possible, but there’s no way to know for sure until we all play Marvel’s Spider-Man, which launches on September 7, 2018 for the PlayStation 4.
