EA Still Owns the Publishing Rights to Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, Complicating Remaster Possibilities

Well, this is certainly an interesting twist. When THQ Nordic announced it had acquired the Kingdoms of Amalur IP, it curiously didn’t mention any plans for the franchise. Now, new information may reveal just why.

A THQ Nordic representative told Eurogamer’s Robert Purchase that EA, who had published Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, still owns the publishing rights to that specific title. While that doesn’t completely rule out the possibility of a remaster, it does make the situation a little more complicated. The representative did not note what kind of relationship THQ Nordic and EA have at this point, or if there are even any discussions occurring.

Obviously THQ Nordic does own the overall Kingdoms of Amalur IP, which means there won’t be problem attempting to create new titles in the series. A sequel to Reckoning was reportedly in development before 38 Studios went under, but there’s no word if EA is tied up with any of that.

While THQ Nordic didn’t mention any plans for the Kingdoms of Amalur franchise, that doesn’t mean it isn’t actively weighing its options. The representative said the company is doing its “homework” and will announce something when the company is “confident” and “very familiar with the franchise.” Of course, a brand-new game will take some time to complete, so it may be a bit before we see anything new from Kingdoms of Amalur.
