Historically, Insomniac Games and Sony have an incredible partnership, from which the likes of Spyro and Ratchet and Clank were born. Yet, this didn’t mitigate the surprise that struck masses when Insomniac’s Spider-Man game was revealed as a PlayStation 4 exclusive. The union makes perfect sense. For one, the webslinger’s film rights are in Sony Pictures’ hands. But, apparently, there’s more to it than legalities and old friends. According to Creative Director Bryan Intihar, Marvel’s Spider-Man wouldn’t exist if not for PlayStation.
During a spoilercast interview with Kinda Funny Games, Intihar lauded Sony for supporting the project so readily.
It really all aligned. We’ve worked with Sony for so long over the years. Working with them again was awesome… This game would not exist if it wasn’t for PlayStation, if not for their support. I’m telling you, anytime I wanted to do something and I wanted to make some drastic change, it was just like, ‘okay.’ I never heard about anything. It was just like, ‘go do it.’ The question was, ‘is it gonna make the game better?’ and I’d say, ‘yep’, and they’d go, ‘okay’, and that would be the last time I’d hear about it. So many people want to talk about Marvel and Insomniac, which it’s awesome… But I owe everything to PlayStation.
In playing Marvel’s Spider-Man, the amount of love and care poured into every facet of it is easily discernible. In our review, we praised Insomniac’s exploration of the “deep intricacies of Peter’s life and relationships,” as well as the incredible gameplay. It’s good to know the game’s publisher saw all of this and more from the start.
Check out the interview below. Talk on Sony’s support of Insomniac’s vision for Spider-Man begins around the 11 minute mark.
