Sunsoft, a company many retro enthusiasts will remember for games such as Blaster Master, Final Fantasy Legend, and Power Quest, is about to make a splash in multiple spaces with Dark Eclipse. It’s a VR MOBA game, the first of its kind, and it’s coming out on the PlayStation VR later this month on September 25, 2018.
Dark Eclipse will be a free-to-play game, and players will be able to use either the PlayStation Move controllers or a regular DualShock 4 to play it. Gameplay is 1v1, with each player running a team of three Leaders. The roster comprises a total of 15 Leaders, which are bolstered by support Soldiers guided by player orders. The controls are “drag and drop” style and are inspired by the real-time strategy genre.
A press release announcing the game describes Dark Eclipse as a “passion project” on the part of Sunsoft. What’s fascinating is this release coincides with the company’s 40th anniversary of operating in video games, a tenure that has been full of ups and downs.
Sunsoft’s most recent game is a variation of Shanghai for mobile devices, which was released in 2017, and there’s a six year gap between that and Mahjong Cub3d, which Atlus published for the Nintendo DS. So not only is Dark Eclipse the first PlayStation VR MOBA, but it’s also a re-emergence of sorts for a company that has several classic games tied to its name.
