DDoS Attackers Target Final Fantasy XIV, Square Enix to Coordinate With ISPs

It seems that Ubisoft wasn’t the only developer targeted by DDoS attackers yesterday as Square Enix announced that it was also fighting off an attack aimed towards its popular MMORPG, Final Fantasy XIV.

Both companies have since been taking steps to mitigate the issue, with Ubisoft noting that it managed to fight off the attack but will continue to monitor the situation. It’s unclear if the developer is expecting another attack over the weekend or not.

Meanwhile, Square Enix said that it has further reinforced defensive measures against DDoS attacks, and will be coordinating with internet service providers to combat any future attempts to disrupt service. Final Fantasy XIV has been targeted fairly frequently in the past.

At the moment, we’re unable to confirm if the same group was behind both attacks or not.

2018 has been relatively peaceful for the gaming community compared to previous years during which attackers targeted major publishers and developers. In recent years, hacking groups have also managed to bypass security and steal customer data from online video game retailers. As we now approach the prime holiday season, companies will undoubtedly be deploying defensive measures to mitigate potential attacks.

Here’s hoping that the rest of 2018 goes by smoothly.
