Bandai Namco Starts Soulcalibur Documentary Series

Bandai Namco has just released the first in a series of YouTube videos building to a documentary called Swords and Souls: The Rise of Soulcalibur. In the video, various personalities and professionals from the Soulcalibur community share their stories of how they got into the series, what they like about it, and of course how the community developed over the years.

Take a look at the first part below.

Perhaps one of the most interesting takeaways, if you aren’t familiar with the scene, is that Soulcalibur has traditionally been super popular in France. In fact, while many fighting games are typically dominated by USA vs Japan rivalries (with notable exceptions), the premiere rivalry for Soulcalibur has been USA vs France. This video touches quite a bit on that rivalry, including infamous moments from the Soulcalibur II days that the community still fondly remembers.

Surprisingly , the personalities in the video such as Markman and Maxmillian, state that Soulcalibur II was a high point for the competitive scene, and point to problems with online infrastructure and other issues that held back later entries, particularly with Soulcalibur IV and V. This of course transitions into the announcement for Soulcalibur VI, and a “to be continued” screen for the next video.

Soulcalibur VI releases for the PlayStation 4, the Xbox One, and the PC on October 19, 2018.
