Mat Piscatella of the NPD group has shared more interesting sales data, this time for the top 10 best-selling survival horror games in the United States. To the surprise of no one, the Resident Evil series takes most of the spots on the list, with seven entries in the top ten.
Aside from the various Resident Evil games, Dying Light has also performed well, taking the number three spot on the list. Other notable entries are Dead Space 2, from the now-shuttered Visceral Games, and The Evil Within, from Tango Gameworks. You can check out the full list below:

Piscatella points out how impressive it is that the 2019 Resident Evil 2 remake has nearly reached the sales of the original Resident Evil 2, which released in 1998. In terms of worldwide sales, the 2019 remake might have already surpassed those of the original, although specific stats have not been disclosed as of August 2019.
Although Resident Evil 5 is more action oriented than many games on this list, it’s still the number one best-selling survival horror game in the United States, with its predecessor, Resident Evil 4 behind it. Both of those games are beloved, yes, but the community has acknowledged that the series strayed from the survival horror roots of the original games. Nonetheless, they made Capcom a ton of money.
In February of 2019, Capcom released worldwide sales figures for its flagship franchises, including the Resident Evil series. You can find those stats below:
- Resident Evil 5 – 7.4 million units
- Resident Evil 6 – 7.2 million units
- Resident Evil 2 – 4.96 million units
- Resident Evil 2 (2019) – 4.2 million units
- Resident Evil 3: Nemesis – 3.5 million units
- Resident Evil – 2.75 million units
It’s worth noting that this NPD report only includes physical sales, so the overall stats might be slightly different when factoring digital downloads. In addition, these figures are only for the United States.
