Musician Raphael Saadiq, one of the co-founders of video game developer Illfonic LLC, has revealed that his studio is currently working on a Ghostbusters game.
As spotted by ResetEra user chairhome, Saadiq made the announcement during a Questlove Supreme podcast last week. Talking about Illfonic’s projects, he mentioned Friday the 13th: The Game, last year’s Predator: Hunting Grounds, and a Ghostbusters game in development “right now.”
Since Illfonic’s last two games are PlayStation console-exclusives (Predator: Hunting Grounds and Arcadegeddon) and Sony owns the Ghostbusters franchise, there’s speculation that the upcoming title will be a PlayStation console-exclusive as well. However, there was no indication about this from Saadiq and he made no comment other than revealing that Ghostbusters is in development.
That said, Sony’s ownership of Ghostbusters should be a relief for Illfonic. Friday the 13th: The Game met an unfortunate end after years of legal battles between publisher Gun Media and franchise screenwriter, Victor Miller. The battle didn’t end in Gun Media’s favor, resulting in development being ceased and servers being shut down.
“The entire license is currently under a legal microscope,” the company told disappointed fans back in 2018. “We wish this was a more clear-cut, black and white scenario, but it is not. There is a lot of gray. We hope that in the near future more legal clarity will occur, but this is not Gun’s call.”
We’ll update our readers when Illfonic’s Ghostbusters is formally announced. In the meantime, you can check out 2019’s Ghostbusters: The Video Game Remastered.
