Hell Let Loose Studio CEO Says Last-Gen PS4 and Xbox One Release is Unlikely

Black Matter CEO Max Rea says that a last-gen console release of Hell Let Loose for the PS4 and Xbox One is unlikely, due to how complex porting the PC game was to next-gen consoles. While Rea did not give a definitive answer to whether the developer was considering the port, he states that the studio’s current focus is improving the console experience on PS5 and Xbox Series X.

Hell Let Loose is a first-person military shooter featuring historically accurate battlefields from the Western and Eastern fronts of World War II. The game features 50 vs 50 player battles and gameplay that rewards, and even necessitates, team communication. Black Matter originally released Hell Let Loose on PC via Steam back in July, and it currently holds a “very positive” score on the storefront.

Hell Let Loose was officially released for the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S earlier this week after a brief open beta on the PS5. Furthermore, it’s even included as a free game for October 2021 on PlayStation Plus for subscribers interested in trying it out. Additionally, the game also supports console cross-platform play.

But porting the game from PC was not all smooth sailing; Rea reveals that the studio struggled to bring the game to next-gen consoles. Specifically, as Rea says in an interview with The Loadout, Hell Let Loose was originally intended for play on PC, which has different design principles:

What you see on console is a result of us having to really live develop the game during our early access period … And then also as a result of taking a game that wasn’t built with console in mind, and then trying to make it work on console. Designing for console, which is obviously far more restrictive than PC, has instilled a sense of proper design principles.

When asked about a possible last-gen port, the Black Matter CEO says he’s “not sure,” but that he would “say no just to give kind of a hard and fast answer.” For now, players on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X can all enjoy Hell Let Loose.
