Ed Boon Shares 30-Year-Old Mortal Kombat Clip That Shows How Scorpion’s GET OVER HERE! Came to Life

Mortal Kombat and the phrase GET OVER HERE! are practically synonymous. The famous Scorpion quote comes with his spear move that no game in the series is complete without.

The original game released in 1992, but development began 30 years ago. To celebrate the occasion, co-creator Ed Boon has shared a clip on Twitter, which shows how Scorpion’s spear move came to life back then. Check it out.

The full nine-part thread is worth reading because it offers insight into video game development challenges at a time when having ample memory was unheard of.

“We were so tight on memory that we didn’t even capture any motions for the victim reactions,” Boon explained in one tweet. “Instead we borrowed from their existing animation frames. You can hear us talk about reusing one of the victim’s ‘knockdown’ animations when they initially get hit by the spear.”

Repurposing animations was one of “many tricks” that allowed developers to save memory.

Boon teased that he’ll celebrate Mortal Kombat‘s 30th anniversary by releasing more “fly-on-the-wall” clips like the one above. Fans are hoping that there’s more planned to mark the occasion, like the announcement of a new title. However, we wouldn’t recommend holding your breath at this time.
