PS5 Update October 20

Today’s PS5 System Software Update Once Again Improves System Performance

A new PS5 System Software Update has arrived today, October 20. Once again, the main purpose of Version: 21.02-04.03.00 is to “improve system performance” with no other details as to what has been changed. The good news is a minor update comes with a relatively small file size, clocking in at just 913.7 MB.

The patch notes for the update simply say “this system software update improves system performance,” which is usually a codeword for behind-the-scenes security fixes and software upgrades. It follows on from another minor update just a few days ago, which also improved system performance.

While these might not sound terribly interesting, the SVP of Platform Experience Hideaki Nishino has said there are “interesting, exciting, fantastic” ideas to come in future updates, some of which have been brewing since before the console’s launch in 2020. Some of these changes could even be introduced in minor system software updates like today, although you would hope Sony would tell us about them if they did. One we do know about is the addition of a New section to the PS5 PlayStation Store that enables players to see the latest releases in one handy spot.

The last major update for PlayStation 5 arrived last month and enabled the SSD expansion bay for all console owners. Other improvements included the customization of the Control Center, an enhanced Game Base, game library platform indicators, screen reader controls, and 3D audio support for TV speakers. The PlayStation app didn’t miss out either, getting the option to view friends’ Share Screen broadcasts. Sony is currently running a limited beta in Canada and Japan that automatically uploads eligible screenshots and game clips to the app so they can be shared.

PlayStation is enjoying a week of success for their newest console. First it was revealed the PS5 had become the best selling console in the US in September 2021, breaking the 33 week record held by the Nintendo Switch. Then the console won a Good Design Gold Award from the Japanese government for its “unprecedented 3D curved surfaces” and unique outer design.
