PlayStation 5 Shipped 3.3M Units in Record Second Quarter, Bringing Lifetime Total to 13.4M Units

Sony Group has published its financial report for the second quarter of FY2021 ended September 30th, revealing that it shipped an additional 3.3 million PlayStation 5s over the last quarter.

Since its release in November 2020, PS5 has shipped 13.4 million units to date. In the same quarter, Sony shipped 0.2 million PS4s, bringing the console’s lifetime total to 116.6 million units to date.

On the software side, 76.4 million video games were sold on the PS4 and PS5 during the quarter, out of which 7.6 million were Sony-published games. PlayStation Store posted its biggest second quarter revenue ever, raking in more than $2.86 billion. PlayStation Software & Services also saw its biggest Q2 revenue ever with over $4.03 billion made. A total of 104 million monthly active users spent an average of $36.27 on PSN over the last three months.

Overall, PlayStation experienced its best Q2 ever with over $5.86 billion in revenue between July and September, 2021.

Currently, PlayStation is Sony’s biggest revenue driver, accounting for 27 percent of the pie during the quarter. PlayStation is also Sony’s highest profit earner, accounting for 25 percent of the company’s overall profit in the last three months.

During Q2 FY2021, Sony’s gaming division saw a whopping 287.4 percent year-on-year increase in hardware sales. While physical game sales saw a 17.6 percent year-on-year decline in sales, digital game sales (via PS Store) increased by 1.1 percent year-on-year during the same period. Last but not least, sales of add-on content – including DLCs and microtransactions – increased by 4.7 percent year-on-year in Q2, and network services sales (PS Plus, PS Now) increased by 4.7 percent year-on-year.

Suffice to say, Sony had a great Q2.
