PS5 First Year

One Year of PS5: PlayStation 5 Players Racked Up 4.6 Billion Hours of Gameplay in the Console’s First Year

The PlayStation 5 console is celebrating its first birthday today in many regions. As such, Sony has decided to reveal some of the more interesting facts and figures for the console and its games. One of those is that players have managed to accumulate more than 4.6 billion hours of gameplay in the first year of the PS5, and over 26 million hours of those have been streamed to viewers around the world.

During the last 12 months, there have been many PlayStation 5 exclusive titles released, including Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Returnal, Deathloop, Demon’s Souls, Death Stranding: Director’s Cut, Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade, Destruction AllStars, and not forgetting Astro’s Playroom that came already installed on the console, ready to show players the ins and outs of the new hardware. Of course, there have also been plenty of multi-platform games, bringing the total number of PS5 games to over 360. Sony put together a list of the top ten titles on PS5 according to gameplay hours and some may surprise you:

  1. Fortnite
  2. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War
  3. FIFA 21
  4. NBA 2K21
  5. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla
  6. Destiny 2
  7. MLB The Show 21
  8. Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales
  9. Demon’s Souls
  10. NBA 2K22

While most are multiplayer, constantly updated living world, and sports games, which would obviously earn high gameplay hours, some surprise single-player entries earn spots on the list, including Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Demon’s Souls.

Sony fully intends to keep the PlayStation 5 going at this momentum. Sony Interactive Entertainment’s President and CEO Jim Ryan reiterated the company currently has 25 titles in development between the different PlayStation Studios. Of those that we know about, Guerrilla Games has Horizon Forbidden West, Insomniac Games has Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and Marvel’s Wolverine, Naughty Dog has a The Last of Us multiplayer project, Gran Turismo 7 is coming soon from Polyphony Digital, and Santa Monica Studio is developing God of War Raanarok.

More mysteriously, there are new IPs in development at Bend Studio and London Studio, and there are multiple new projects at Firesprite (although these might not necessarily by PlayStation exclusive). Pixelopus is developing a PS5 game in collaboration with Sony Pictures Animation and Team Asobi is working on its “most ambitious game yet.” Whether they count or not, Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection is bringing the series to new platforms and God of War is heading to PC too.
