Sony Recently Showcased a VR Headset Prototype Featuring 4K OLED Microdisplay

Sony Corporation recently showcased an OLED virtual reality headset prototype, which features 4K microdisplay.

As spotted by folks over at UploadVR, the presentation was a part of Sony’s Technology Day. The prototype was made by the company’s Research & Development Center, not Sony Interactive Entertainment/PlayStation division.

Nevertheless, the video below is worth watching and gives us an idea of what the company’s toying with, so check it out.

According to Sony, this VR head-mounted display achieves 4K with one eye and 8K with both. High image quality is achieved by “multi-pixel and miniaturization using fine processing and advanced packaging technology cultivated through the development and manufacture of CMOS image sensors, and OLED microdisplay using device and circuit technology cultivated through the development of displays.”

With low latency and high-definition images, Sony believes this headset could be used in industrial applications as well as the entertainment field because it can “express the texture of materials and human expressions in high definition in real time based on the movements of the user’s head.”

Sony has yet to fully lift the curtains and unveil the next generation of PlayStation VR. The device above is merely a prototype and not necessarily indicative of what’s coming in the near future.
