Alan Wake 2 Is Remedy’s Take on Survival Horror and Doesn’t Require Prior Knowledge of the Series

Following the announcement of Alan Wake 2 for current-gen platforms, Remedy Entertainment revealed that the upcoming sequel will be a survival horror title. Notably, Remedy also stated that the game will not require players to have prior knowledge of the series.

That doesn’t mean fans of Alan Wake won’t get to enjoy some interesting connections, however. As Remedy’s Creative Director Sam Lake wrote on the PlayStation Blog, Alan Wake 2 will “add to the backstory” of the original Alan Wake. And unlike Remedy’s other popular series Max Payne, the studio had already laid out a plan for the sequel when conceptualizing Alan Wake.

The first game was, as Lake puts it, an action game with horror elements. Alan Wake 2, however, will be Remedy’s take on the survival horror genre. It will “truly connect the gameplay and the story”, and will be a deeply layered mystery.

For those new to the series, there’s no better timing to get into Alan Wake than right now. With the release of Alan Wake Remastered earlier this year for the PS4 and PS5, it’s never been easier to play the game since its initial release in 2010. You can check out our official review here.

Alan Wake 2 will release for the PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC via Epic Games Store sometime in 2023.
