George R. R. Martin Thinks Video Games Are ‘as Big as Movies,’ if Not Bigger

Author George R. R. Martin penned a blog over the weekend, reflecting upon his work on FromSoftware’s Elden Ring. He recalled being contacted by Hidetaka Miyazaki to build a fantasy world, and although video games “are not really” his thing, he found the offer too interesting to refuse.

While talking about Elden Ring, Martin claimed that video games are “as big as movies…. bigger, actually.”

“Miyazaki and his team from FromSoftware were doing groundbreaking stuff with gorgeous art, and what they wanted from me was just a bit of worldbuilding: a deep, dark, resonant world to serve as a foundation for the game they planned to create,” Martin recalled. “And as it happens, I love creating worlds and writing imaginary history. So I did my bit, and handed off to my new friends in Japan, and they took it from there. And years passed. Video games are as big as movies these days (bigger, actually)… and take just as long to create.”

While expressing his excitement over Elden Ring‘s release date drawing close, Martin claimed that the game “looks incredible.”

After what seems like forever, Elden Ring will finally release on February 25, 2022 for the PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series X/S, and PC.
