Following Backlash, Ubisoft Says Players Will Accept Its NFT Push With Time

Ubisoft seems convinced that its NFT push is following the right trajectory, telling a crypto site in an interview that while the company understands players’ concerns, it believes that they’ll accept NFTs with time.

Speaking with Decrypt (via ResetEra), Ubisoft’s blockchain technical director Didier Genevois said that NFTs are a “major change,” but if Ubisoft sticks by its principles, players will end up embracing “decentralization.” What are those principles? In Ubisoft’s words, “use the tech responsibly,” “build a safe environment,” and “focus on meaningful value propositions for players that benefit their gaming experience.”

“We have received a lot of feedback since the announcement, and we hear both the encouragement and the concerns,” Genevois said. “We understand where the sentiment towards the technology comes from, and we need to keep taking it into consideration every step of the way.”

Ubisoft has struck a partnership with crypto startup Aleph.im to help realize its vision.

“Our main objective with Ubisoft Quartz is to showcase the true value of decentralization to our players,” Genevois explained. “Aleph.im played a key role in the realization of our vision by allowing us to go one step further and decentralize the storage of the Digits’ video asset and metadata.”

Aleph.im founder Jonathan Schemoul believes NFT support will make games more enjoyable (press X to doubt). “Most big publishers will end up proposing in-game NFT support,” Schemoul added. “That would be a great breakthrough.”

Ubisoft introduced its NFT program to the widely-panned Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Breakpoint, and so far, things aren’t looking good.
