PlayStation Tournaments Brings Esports to PS5 in 2022 System Update

Sony has confirmed that the PS5 is due to receive a PlayStation Tournaments feature via a firmware update sometime later this year. This news was revealed by Sony Interactive Entertainment’s chief executive officer Jim Ryan during his CES 2022 keynote speech. No further information about PlayStation Tournaments has been shared yet.

PlayStation Tournaments PS5 update may come with several improvements

Although Sony has yet to detail PlayStation Tournaments, recent patent applications suggest that the company is toying with several ideas, including the ability to host tournaments in PS5 games that don’t offer this feature by default. Additionally, Sony may allow individuals, developers, and other third parties to host a variety of tournaments across multiple titles. Players’ performance may be tracked in real-time and tied to PlayStation Network profiles.

Opinion: Sony’s going all-in on esports and PS5 Tournaments is the next step

Zarmena writes… Sony has been making some big moves in the esports scene. Notably, the company acquired Evo Championship Series in partnership with esports venture RTS. With 25 years under its belt, Evo is the world’s largest and longest-running fighting game tournament and its acquisition is no small feat. All of this came at a time when esports gained recognition around the world, garnered a sizeable (and growing) audience, and prompted schools to recognize its potential. With PS5 Tournaments, Sony can take its esports venture to the next level.

In other news, Sony is making some great strides in the virtual reality arena with PlayStation VR 2 and has already announced what could be PSVR 2’s first killer app: Horizon Call of the Mountain.
