Days Gone Should Be 80 on Metacritic, Dev Insists

Former Bend Studio staffer Jeff Ross insists that Days Gone reviews didn’t quite do the game justice and it should have earned a Metacritic score of at least 80/100. The chatty Ross, who just can’t stop talking about Days Gone or his failed pitch for a sequel, spoke to USA Today and blamed the game’s technical issues on several teams and “non-engineers.” He then proceeded to break down Days Gone‘s current metascore of 71 and did his own math to arrive at a figure of 79-82.

Days Gone PS4 reviews versus PC reviews

Ross argues that the PC version of Days Gone garnered a metascore of 76 because by the time the game released on Steam, a number of technical issues had already been resolved. What Ross doesn’t realize is that the PS4 metascore is based on 109 critic reviews whereas the PC metascore is an average of just 47 critic reviews. There is a difference of a whopping five points between the two scores.

“I think that the technical issues set us back 10 points,” Ross said. “The studio director argued with me on that, but let’s just look at it from an objective point – let’s just say that we got to 70, now divide that by three for tech, creative, and design. You lose one point here, you gain one here. One of the points that we lost was due to creative decisions, but a lot of the points that we gained were because of creative decisions.”

Opinion: Days Gone reviews are just fine, its developers’ behavior is not

Zarmena writes… While I understand that both Ross and John Garvin take pride in their work and feel that they made a great game, the constant scrutiny of Days Gone reviews and the duo blaming everyone else for the lack of a sequel makes me think Sony did the right thing by not greenlighting the pitch. I’m not sure how much of an improvement we would have seen in Days Gone 2 if two of its leads insist they made a better game than people feel they’ve played!
