Battlefield 2042 has been a disaster, and DICE has had issues with accepting responsibility. Fans of the series reacted negatively when the game released with major issues. At least some of these are being taken into account, and the decision has been made to delay the release of Battlefield 2042 Season 1 while the developers implement “extensive fixes.” Instead of releasing in March, the first season will now drop in Summer 2022.

Battlefield 2042 launched without VOIP and an in-game scoreboard. It’s been a buggy mess, and gameplay is generally unsatisfying. Gunplay is horrible, and the maps are bland and overly large, feeling more like they should be in a battle royale than a Battlefield game. The only thing this game really has in common with previous titles in the series is that it’s an FPS with a lot of players and vehicles.
DICE essentially threw out everything about the Battlefield series when designing 2042. Instead of being based on classes, the game has named specialists, which has been one of the most prominent issues players have had with the game. After all, it makes no sense that 128 players are all using a handful of characters. Despite this, DICE is still going all-in with the specialist system and promises more will come.
Devs have admitted that fixes for the game are taking too long in the past, and this delay to season one will likely be the final nail in the coffin for Battlefield 2042. The Hazard Zone game mode immediately flopped after release, and there’s really no way to add the massive list of missing features without a major rework.
Opinion: DICE Should Retire the Game and Issue Refunds
As we’ve seen in the past with Anthem, EA is willing to drop games that are beyond redemption. It’s evident that Battlefield 2042 didn’t start as a Battlefield game and was some generic shooter project DICE modified at the last minute to fill a hole in EA’s fall release schedule. The only real way to give players what they want is to turn 2042 into another game, and the best way to do that is to start over. Strip Portal mode out of 2042, make it free-to-play, discard the rest, and start development on the next Battlefield title.
