Developer Illfonic announced they were working on a Ghostbusters game five months ago, and now they’ve announced exactly what that game will be. Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed is a 4v1 asymmetrical multiplayer game for PS5 and PS4 and it will be arriving later this year.
When will Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed be released?
Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed will be released in Q4 2022 for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Epic Games Store, so some time between October 1 and December 31. The 4v1 asymmetrical multiplayer game will pit four Ghostbusters against a single ghost in gameplay akin to Illfonic’s previous titles like Friday The 13th: The Game and Predator: Hunting Grounds.
As a Ghostbuster, four players arm themselves with the typical Proton Pack, Ghost Trap and PKE Meter as they hunt down the ghost that’s causing chaos in public areas like museums, prisons, and hotels. You’ll need to locate the ghost, trap it in the streams from the Particle Thrower, and capture it in the Ghost Trap. The aim is to capture the ghost before it has fully haunted the environment.
On the other hand, the ghost gets to spend as much time as possible haunting innocent civilians and giving the Ghostbusters the run around by teleporting between rifts. As the ghost flies around the environment, it can possess objects lying around the rooms, slime unwitting victims, and summon even more ghoulish minions to do their bidding. Players get a choice of multiple different ghosts, each of which have different abilities.
While the Ghostbusters will be a rookie team, there will be some familiar faces. Winston Zeddemore, who is voiced by Ernie Hudson, will be located in the Firehouse to give out missions to the newbies. Here players can also customize their characters, upgrade equipment and abilities, and learn how to use the Particle Thrower properly. Ray Stantz, voiced by Danny Aykroyd, is now running a book store called Ray’s Occult Books, and he’s always ready to give out some tips too.
Regardless of platform, Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed players will be able to take on the ghosts with their friends thanks to cross-platform play. There will even be AI bots to fill empty spots, making it entirely possible for players to take part in solo matches offline.
In other news, Returnal’s free Ascension update was released today, March 22. The update adds campaign co-op and a new endless survival mode. Elsewhere, Epic Games and Microsoft have managed to raise $36 million between them for Ukraine relief in just 24 hours following the donation of proceeds from the sale of Fortnite content.
