PS5 system update

New PS5 System Update Includes UI, Party Chat, and Accessibility Enhancements

The next system software update for PS5 and PS4 is rolling out globally today. Sony has released patch notes detailing all the new features. The company says the PS5 system update includes “fan-requested features” after being tested in beta.

What are the PS5 system update patch notes?

One fan-requested feature that has made its way onto the platform with today’s system update is the ability to create and join open and closed parties on both PS5 and PS4. Open parties will allow players to join friends without an invite, whereas a closed party will still require an invite.

As for exclusives on the PS5 system update, UI enchantments have been made to game base and trophy cards. Accessibility features have also been improved, like a mono audio option for headphone users.

PS5 players in the U.S. or U.K. will be able to test a new feature with this latest update. With the command “Hey, PlayStation,” players will be able to open games, apps, and settings with their voice. It is worth noting this feature is currently only available in the English language. The feature had previously been in the beta program since early February but is now available to all account holders in the U.S. and U.K.

Now onto improvements to the PlayStation app, the patch notes confirmed the ability to create and join open and closed parties like console. The game base side of the app has been refined in a way Sony says is “easier to access the Friends, Parties and messaging features.” Remote play users on the app can experience a new ‘dark mode’ based on their phone settings.

In this press release, Sony also touched on the future of system software updates for PS5. It has been announced Variable Refresh Rate is heading to the platform in the “coming months.” Hideaki Nishino, senior vice president of Platform Experience said:

On HDMI 2.1-compatible TVs and PC monitors, VRR dynamically syncs the refresh rate of the display to the PS5 console’s graphical output. This enhances visual performance for PS5 games by minimizing or eliminating visual artifacts, such as frame pacing issues and screen tearing.
