Tango Gameworks New Game

Ghostwire: Tokyo Developer Tango Gameworks’ Next Game Is the ‘Complete Opposite of Horror’

Ghostwire: Tokyo is only just being released tomorrow, March 25, but like all game developers, Tango Gameworks is already looking forward to the future. The studio’s founder Shinji Mikami has said they currently have another game in development that is the “complete opposite of horror”.

Why is the new game not a horror title?

Mikami is worried Tango Gameworks is being associated solely with survival horror titles. After all, they’ve developed Evil Within, Evil Within 2, and now Ghostwire: Tokyo. Mikami told the latest issue of Famitsu, as translated by Video Games Chronicle, that he wants the studio to stop being seen as one that only makes games in a single genre and instead be one “that can create a wider variety of games”.

To “eventually change the image that Tango Gameworks currently has,” the team is currently developing a game that is “the complete opposite of horror”. While Mikami refused to go into any more detail, he did explain development is being led by John Johanas, director of the DLC for both of The Evil Within games. He also added he doesn’t even consider Ghostwire: Tokyo to be a horror game, just “an arcade-style action-adventure game.” This is because the main emphasis of the game is to “explore a deserted Tokyo while defeating enemies” even though he does admit it has “a bit of a horror feel to it.”

Players can also expect to see smaller titles coming out of the studio. Mikami’s current plan is to create a “masterpiece” every ten years. In between, he wants the younger members of the studio to be able to develop smaller-scale games on their own, and this works better when there are several smaller development teams of around “several dozen” people. However, now the studio’s parent company ZeniMax is owned by Microsoft, it remains to be seen whether any of these titles will be released on PlayStation consoles.

In other news, Dying Light 2 will be getting New Game Plus, a Photo Mode and extra difficulty settings very soon. These updates are part of the increased amount of content coming to the game during its first year. Elsewhere, Fortnite has announced a skin to commemorate Olympic champion snowboarder Chloe Kim.
