Ghost of Tsushima Movie Finds Screenwriter Who Is a Longstanding PlayStation Fan

The Ghost of Tsushima movie, with a slow and steady approach, has finally found its screenwriter in Takashi Doscher, according to a report by Deadline. The film adaptation of the popular samurai game on PS5 and PS4 will be directed by Chad Stahelski, who is most well-known for the John Wick films, including the upcoming John Wick 4.

Why Takashi Doscher looks like the right screenwriter for the Ghost of Tsushima movie

In December 2021, Stahelski appeared on the red carpet in an interview at The Matrix: Resurrections premiere and revealed that the production team behind the Ghost of Tsushima movie would be focused on “doing it right” and was in the middle of working on the movie’s script.

It would seem that they have found the right person in Takashi Doscher, who tweeted (for the first time on the account) that being chosen as the film’s screenwriter is “the highlight of [his] career” and that he’s a longtime PlayStation gamer who “skipped school to line up for the PS2 on launch day.”

In the tweet, he also mentions remembering watching with his grandparents re-runs of “chambara” films, which translates to “sword fighting” movies and refers to the Japanese “samurai cinema” genre popularized by Akira Kurosawa. For a modern reference point in gaming, you can look at the black-and-white, hack-and-slash Trek to Yomi that is set to release in just a few weeks on May 5.

Doscher has experience in multiple genres as a screenwriter and director for the sci-fi romance Only as well as the documentary A Fighting Chance on ESPN. His most recent screenplay, Blue, is in production and has been described as a “twist on a Japanese monster movie.”

Ghost of Tsushima marks the second film to come from the collaboration between Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions, with the Uncharted film being the first. Sucker Punch Productions, the developer for Ghost of Tsushima, will be highly involved with the film and serve as executive producers.

In other news, more rumors within the VR industry point to PSVR 2 likely releasing in 2023, and developer Vicarious Visions is now Blizzard Albany after the completion of the studio’s merger.
