Stray Day One Player Numbers Break the Record for Annapurna Interactive

Stray has seemingly been a resounding success for developer BlueTwelve Studio and publisher Annapurna Interactive as it has broken the publisher’s record for concurrent player numbers on Steam by quite a margin. The game is still in the top 15 games by current player count on the platform too.

Stray concurrent player numbers exceed 60,000

Stray has managed to rack up 62,963 concurrent players on Steam on its release date today, July 19. At the time of writing, Steam Stats put it in the top 15 games with 48,042 current players, and it is the most popular game that only has a single-player mode. While player numbers aren’t provided on PS5 or PS4, the game is sure to have been a hit there too as it was included in PlayStation Plus Extra and PS Plus Premium on day one. Our own review found Stray to be “a (mostly) relaxing game that takes clever cat interactions and turns them into a compelling adventure” and “those playing Stray on PlayStation Plus should definitely give this one a go”.

This makes Stray the most popular of Annapurna Interactive’s releases on PC platform Steam according to Benji-Sales on Twitter (thanks VGC). The game in second place, Twelve Minutes, managed to rack up just over 8,000 concurrent players in comparison. The top five is completed by Outer Wilds with just under 8,000 players, Neon White with around 3,000 players, and Journey with 1,700 players. However, it is worth bearing in mind that all of those games are multiplatform releases where they’re also likely to have been a hit with console players.

In other news, a Sonic Frontiers release date has potentially leaked from the Steam database and the game will be going head to head with Skull & Bones. Elsewhere, the first images of Yakuza 8 have been leaked from actor Mikuru Asakura’s tour of Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio.
