How To Play PS5 in 1440p (2K)

What used to be a choice between gaming at 1080p or 4K on PS5 has now been expanded to include 1440p, a resolution that’s common amongst modern gaming monitors. Now, instead of being locked to 1080p and suffering blurry visuals, those with a 2K display can select 1440p and enjoy the native resolution with no silly scaling. However, it can be tricky to find the right setting to enable 2K support. Here’s how to play PS5 in 1440p.

How to play PS5 games in 1440p

To play PS5 in 1440p, players must:

  1. Download and install the latest PS5 firmware update.
    • At the time of writing, the update that enables 1440p support is currently only available to those who have signed up to the Software Beta Program.
    • Once it has been tested, the new update will be released to the entire PS5 userbase.
  2. Head to the Home Screen and navigate to the “Settings” page of options.
  3. Select “Screen and Video Settings.”
  4. Choose “Video Output.”
  5. For the resolution, set it to “1440p.”

With 1440p enabled, games will now default to 2K resolution. This is especially useful for those gaming on 1440p monitors. Prior to this update, users of 2K displays were forced to play at 1080p. Even with monitors that had HDMI 2.0, it wasn’t possible to select 4K and enjoyed a downscaled image. Instead, users had to just deal with the less sharp visuals.

This update marks a big step for PlayStation, as it widens its acceptance of hardware that is more targeted at PC gaming. Perhaps we’ll see a middle-tier Sony InZone M6 monitor to fill the gap between 1080p and 4K?
