Sony has said it is hoping PS5 consoles sales will be twice as many as sales of its PS4 consoles in China as part of the expansion of its Chinese games business. While the Chinese gaming market is predominantly mobile-based, the company hopes its China Hero Project will help them reach that lofty target.
Expanding PS5 console sales in China when compared to PS4
Sony has sold more than 3.5 million PS4 consoles in the country. SIE Shanghai president Tatsuo Eguchi told Reuters Sony wants to sell twice as many PS5 consoles as it did for the PS4, meaning they’re hoping for more than 7 million PS5 console sales in China. So far, there have been 670,000 consoles sold since the PS5’s launch in May 2021 so there is a way to go, but previous analysis has shown they’re selling 2.7x as fast as PS4s.
Sony is hoping the China Hero Project will give it the boost that’s needed. China Hero Project games will now be published by Sony as the console provider goes head-to-head with Microsoft, who are themselves looking for big licensing deals with Chinese developers in an effort to find the next Genshin Impact. Sony Interactive Entertainment has also established System Development Department 4 to improve business relationships within the country.
