Nintendo Switch has dominated the Japan console market for five years, but it seems like that might be set to change after PS5 sales beat Switch for the first time ever. Sales of the PS5 console in Japan have increased dramatically year upon year thanks to improved supplies now there is no longer a chronic component shortage.
PS5 sales are up 457% in Japan but Switch sales drop
In February 2023, PS5 sales were up by 457% in Japan compared to those of February 2022. The PS5 sold 65,772 units in February 2022, but this had increased to a massive 366,982 units in February 2023 according to figures from Famitsu (translated by @Genki_JPN). In fact, the console managed to sell more units last month than it did during its first four months of release combined.
PS5 managed to beat Nintendo Switch to become the top-selling console in Japan for last month. This is the first time since February 2018 that Nintendo Switch hasn’t taken the title. This is likely to be because sales of the Switch decreased by 41% compared to this time last year.
Sales of the PS5 also beat both Nintendo Switch and Xbox Series X|S in the UK and across Europe during February 2023. Sales data is yet to emerge for the US but is likely to follow a similar pattern.
