PS5 Disc Drive Selling Out Following PS5 Pro Reveal

It seems the PS5 disc drive is garnering interest thanks to PS5 Pro’s recent reveal. As of this writing, the add on accessory is currently sold out at online retailers Amazon and Best Buy.

Why is the PS5 disc drive selling out?

During the PlayStation Technical Presentation, console architect Mark Cerny revealed the PS5 Pro. The enhanced console features many bells and whistles graphics nerds will love. However, its most controversial design feature (or lack thereof) is the absence of the disc drive. PlayStation Direct and other online retailers do sell the PS5 disc drive separately for $79.99, which is required to use discs on Sony’s console refresh.

This means PlayStation players who plan to buy the PS5 Pro will spend $779.98 not including tax to get the new console with the disc drive. Despite the almost unanimous distaste of the pricing, as pointed out by Wario64, the PS5 disc drive add on sold out at online retailers Amazon and Best Buy.

This recent influx of PS5 disc drive sales following the Pro’s reveal does not seem to be a coincidence. The upcoming console doesn’t have a disc drive, so naturally players who plan on picking up the PS5 Pro will want to grab one. This is purely speculation, but the people buying these disc drives are either players who actually plan to use the add on, or secondary market resellers.

There are several PS5 accessories that have been hard to come by recently. The PS VR2 PC Adapter and the Astro Bot themed DualSense controller regularly sell out shortly after listed. This may be another reason future PS5 Pro purchasers are grabbing a PS5 disc drive.

There is still hope for those looking for a PS5 disc drive. Wal-Mart, Target, and Gamestop still have the accessory available to purchase.

The PS5 Pro launches on November 7, 2024. Preorders go live on September 26, 2024.
