PS4 system software update

PS4 System Update 12.00 Out Now, Patch Notes Released

Sony released PS4 system software update 12.00 alongside a major PS5 firmware update today, and this time, the patch notes are a little different than what we’re used to seeing. In recent months, Sony has been busy plugging security exploits, which is formally called system “stability” or “security” updates. But today’s firmware update brings a small improvement with it.

What does PS4 system update 12.00 (September 12, 2024) do?

“We’ve improved the messages and usability on some screens,” reads the official description. However, rest assured, the update brought with it additional security fixes, ensuring that hackers don’t have it easy.

PS4 jailbreak has been stuck on version 11.00 for a while, and just as the hacking community inches closer to a milestone, Sony throws a spanner in the works. It’ll potentially take years for hackers to catch up at this rate.

Interestingly, Sony seems to have given up on patching PS3 vulnerabilities. The company was making an effort to patch exploits up until February 2024, but has gone radio silent since. A quick trip to the console’s online communities suggests that hackers are comfortably modding PS3s.

As a reminder, jailbroken consoles cannot be used online so if you want to take that route with your PS4, you’ll have to give up on multiplayer.
