A tech expert has finally settled the PS5 Pro vs PC cost debate, stressing that a PC equivalent to Sony’s mid-gen upgrade would cost way more than $700. According to Digital Foundry’s Richard Leadbetter, while it’s possible to build a similarly priced PC, players wouldn’t get the same performance out of it that they will get from a PS5 Pro.
PS5 Pro vs PC: Which costs more?
Speaking to IGN, Leadbetter pointed out that the GPU that most closely matches PS5 Pro’s specs is RTX 4070, which means a base price of $540/£480. Players then have to add in other components like CPU, motherboard, memory, storage, power supply, etc. And of course, building a PC from scratch means purchasing peripherals as well.
Some argue that players can purchase used parts, but a used PS5 Pro will become available eventually and will still cost less than an equivalent PC. If the argument is that players may already have PC peripherals, then so do PS5 owners. At the end of the day, no matter how one approaches this debate, a PC still costs more.
“You could offset the extra cost against the fact that you don’t need extra subscription costs over time, I suppose, but I think you’re missing the fundamental point of what PS5 Pro is and who is going to buy it,” Leadbetter concluded, pointing out that PS5 players can’t carry over their existing library to a PC, so suggesting that they build a PC instead of upgrading to a PS5 Pro makes little sense.
