PS5 Pro Enhanced Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth May Run at Locked 60 FPS

When PS5 Pro was revealed last week, Sony announced several titles will feature improvements that take advantage of its powerful new hardware. These enhanced titles include fan favorites like The Last of Us Part I, Alan Wake 2, and Gran Turismo 7. The recently released Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth seems to be one title that benefits from the enhanced console as well, potentially offering locked 60 frames per second gameplay with an overall improved image quality.

PS5 Pro allows better performance and image quality for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth

Digital Foundry received seven minutes of uninterrupted gameplay of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth that begins in Chapter 2. Oliver Mackenzie specifies that the footage is unlabeled, but it is targeting 60 FPS like the original game’s performance mode. Essentially, the PS5 Pro footage was tested against the game’s performance and graphics modes. The results seem to be in PS5 Pro’s favor, overhauling the game’s image quality while maintaining a mostly locked 60 FPS.

“There are a couple of one-off dropped frames in the opening cutscene, either immediately following a camera cut or a couple of frames after, but you would be very hard-pressed to notice in actual play,” says Mackenzie. “Elsewhere, the game is locked at 60fps, even in the second fight scene which is quite demanding.”

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth: PS5 Pro vs PS5 - A Vast Improvement At 60FPS

These results for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth on PS5 Pro appear to be due to PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), Sony’s AI driven upscaling technique. Mackenzie found that the average internal resolution was around 1152p to 1224p then upscaled to 4K. This is less expensive for the GPU than bringing it to native 4K like the base console’s graphics mode, but still sees similar to better image quality results. Anyone eager to see all of Digital Foundry’s full results should check out the video above.

Of course, these are all based on footage given to Digital Foundry, not footage they recorded themselves. Additionally, it is just a snippet of a roughly 50 hour RPG. Although the results seen are promising, performance may vary when players finally get their hands on a PS5 Pro.
