PS6 May Have a Cheaper Variant and Players Are Concerned

A new rumor suggests that PS6 may have two variants, one of which will come with an affordable price tag. Considering all the criticisms of the PS5 Pro’s price, one would think this rumor would be met with cheers from the crowd, but it has left some players concerned instead.

Would a low price PS6 variant be akin to Xbox Series S?

The aforementioned rumor comes from AMD leaker KeplerL2 (via Reddit), who has a pretty good track record when it comes to the chip manufacturing business. According to Kepler, there are two System-on-a-Chip (SoCs) in development for Sony’s next-gen console, and one of them “will be affordable at least.”

This means we’re not looking at a disc and digital variant situation because those would be powered by the same SoC. There are two possibilities here: a home console + a handheld/remote player or a cheaper console with inferior specs. It’s the latter that has players worried.

Sony has long held the view that making an inferior console is a bad idea, as evidenced in the case of Xbox Series S. Microsoft’s cheaper current-gen system is becoming increasingly hard to develop for, with devs becoming more and more vocal about the problems it poses. If Sony goes down the same route, we’ll have another generation held back by undesirable specs.

As for the possibility of PS6 being accompanied by a handheld, the PS Portal has been a success story for Sony, so it wouldn’t be a surprise if the company releases a robust device that could both be used in conjunction with the PS6 and as a standalone handheld — the latter of which has been rumored for a while.
