There is a bizarre debate taking place over standard PS5 Pro preorders right now, and shockingly, this one’s been instigated by journalists and publications rather than the usual suspects: console warriors. For some reason, a $700 niche product not selling out is being interpreted as something negative.
PS5 Pro isn’t a limited edition product, its preorders not selling out means nothing
The debate was sparked by a strangely worded tweet by The Verge’s Tom Warren, who made it a point to note that PS5 Pro hasn’t sold out in the U.S. or U.K., before adding that the console’s “$700 price point means it’ll be available this holiday.”
Warren technically isn’t wrong, but it’s strange to point out that a product not designed to appeal to the masses hasn’t sold out. His tweet spurred numerous headlines from various websites both big and small — nearly all of which are focused on preorders not selling out.
Circana’s Mat Piscatella criticized Warren’s tweet. On his Bluesky account, Piscatella called out the bait before deleting his post. He then followed up by saying, “Just stick to hyping AI crap no one wants rather than say that it’s somehow bad a not limited edition console hasn’t sold out for preorders.”
Warren, seemingly confused about what he started, replied that Piscatella’s reaction was “weird.”
In the midst of all of this, it’s actually gamers being reasonable, pointing out that the limited edition PS5 Pro 30th anniversary console sold out instantly. They also pointed out that Sony was often critcized for not having enough PS5 stock in the midst of the pandemic, so it’s no surprise that the company now has an adequate supply of new hardware.
