The Until Dawn PS5 remake’s launch has been marred by its poor technical performance. Now, developer Ballistic Moon is asking its players to report any tech issues they’ve experienced.
Until Dawn PS5 remake suffers from technical issues
In a new analysis from tech aficionados Digital Foundry, Oliver Mackenzie found several issues with Until Dawn in terms of performance. The most glaring issue stems from its prerendered content. Cutscenes suffer from frame pacing issues, which in turn give it a violent stutter. Mackenzie describes it as “horrendous,” and from the footage, that seems like an accurate description.
Image quality during cutscenes also takes a hit in the Until Dawn PS5 remake. According to Mackenzie, the internal resolution is around 1440p to 1728p, which is decent. However aliasing, particularly on the fur and hair, hinders the general look of the game.
This issues extend to the actual playable content where players control one of the characters. Mackenzie found bad frame pacing issues, with the frame rate jumping up and down slightly throughout gameplay. Also, there is no performance mode, with the game only playable at around 30 fps.
Although Digital Foundry pinpointed the Until Dawn PS5 remake’s issues, it doesn’t take an expert to see that the game is technically flawed. Ballistic Moon posted a tweet on its X (formerly Twitter) page asking players to report any tech issues they experience to its support email.
The replies to the post are mostly requests for a 60 fps performance mode. A couple users said they were soft locked on Chapter 10 during the cave sequence as Sam. General crashes and bugs are also being reported by players.
The Until Dawn remake launched on October 4, 2024, for PS5. Along with its performance woes, it is reviewing less favorably than the initial release. Despite its struggles, it looks like Firesprite Studio is making a sequel to the horror cult classic.
