It’s been more than two years since PS Plus was revamped and split into three tiers, but the service still doesn’t differentiate between Essential (monthly) and Extra or Premium/Deluxe games in players’ libraries. Long-time members have trouble separating monthly games from the others, especially in cases where the catalogs overlap.
Why differentiating between PS Plus Essential and Extra/Premium games is important
Currently, all PS Plus games are lumped into the same category, so unless players manually create folders to separate monthly games from the other catalogs, it’s hard to tell which games are yours to keep. Those who’ve been PS Plus members for a long time will find the process of creating folders cumbersome, however.
It’s important to differentiate between monthly and Extra games. As we’ve highlighted over and over again (most recently, in the case of LittleBigPlanet 3), players who accidentally override the licenses of monthly games by downloading them from the Extra catalog (in case of an overlap) end up losing those games forever once they depart the catalog. Since it seems that Sony has no plans to fix this issue, tags for each tier would prove to be helpful.
Additionally, since Essential games don’t leave the service, players can put a pin in them indefinitely while tackling games they pick out from Extra and Premium catalogs first.
According to this user who contacted PS Support to discuss the issue, Sony’s own customer service agents wish there was a way to separate the games (presumably because they’re tired of dealing with similar inquiries over and over). Xbox Game Pass does a great job differentiating between its various offerings, so tagging PS Plus games shouldn’t be a gargantuan task for Sony.
