It was recently reported that Ubisoft disbanded the team behind Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown shortly after releasing its Mask of Darkness DLC. Developers of that team ended up splintering off into different projects. One of these projects is reportedly a Rayman Remake.
Former Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown devs migrated to unannounced Rayman Remake
From Grant Taylor-Hill at Insider Gaming, around a dozen developers from the Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown team are working on a Rayman Remake. According to their sources, the unannounced game is codenamed “Project Steamboat”, and is primarily developed by Ubisoft Milan. It is also reported that Rayman creator Michel Ancel is a consultant on the project. The creator’s involvement has spiked some concern, as he is accused of toxic leadership.
Taylor-Hill also reports other developers from the Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown team moved to work on Beyond Good & Evil 2, as well as the next Ghost Recon game. A shame, considering Gautoz reported developers considered their work on the metroidvania to be a sort of “rehabilitation zone” for those burnt out on developing Beyond Good & Evil 2.
It seems Ubisoft is in an incredibly fragile state at present. Despite its critical success, the game development giant rejected a proposal, and second expansion for Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown due to not meeting sales targets. Related to the franchise, the Prince of Persia: Sands of Time remake was delayed indefinitely until recently when a trailer flaunted a very broad (and probably very delayable) 2026 launch window.
Ubisoft was also forced to rethink its game launch strategy due to Star Wars Outlaws‘ poor performance at launch. This caused the company to delay its highly anticipated game Assassin’s Creed Shadows to February 2025, and shy away from staggered releases. In turn, the Collector’s Edition for the upcoming action adventure game received a $50 price cut.
