We know it’s election day in the U.S., but we wanted to share a little fun fact with our readers: PS3 lifetime sales crossed 88 million. The last official figure (as of March, 2017) was 87.4 million, which was disclosed back in 2019.
PS3 sales surpassed Xbox 360 by about 4 million
The latest update (spotted by a ResetEra user) comes from an image posted by X user okonomiyonda, who apparently works for Sony. The image is that of a glass display housing PS3 consoles at Sony’s headquarters, with text printed on it that reads, “In memory of PS3 last production. Manufactured 88,159,116 pcs. Period: Oct 2006 – Jun 2016).
We’re assuming the last approximately 700,000 consoles were sold after March 2017, but weren’t accounted for in the data Sony shared in 2019.
The last official figure we have of Xbox 360 sales sits at around 84 million (as of June, 2014), which means that despite a rocky start, PS3 surpassed its rival by about four million.
PS3 still enjoys a fairly active player base for an 18-year-old console, going by data that was leaked as part of Insomniac Games hack. The console also remains very popular in the modding community.
