Sony is reportedly purchasing Kadokawa Corporation, the parent company of FromSoftware. This breaking news is brought to us by Reuters, who claims that both parties are in talks right now and a deal could be finalized within the next few weeks. Sony already owns a stake in Kadokawa and FromSoftware.
Sony increased its stake in Kadokawa and FromSoftware in recent years
Sony and Kadokawa have partnered on a number of projects. The PlayStation maker most recently increased its stake in subsidiary FromSoftware in August 2022. Back then, PlayStation boss Hermen Hulst said that Sony’s investment in FromSoftware might not be limited to video games.
Chinese giant Tencent also holds a stake in Kadokawa, but if this deal goes through, Sony will have a majority share of over 80% combined. According to Reuters, report of Sony purchasing Kadokawa resulted in the latter’s shares closing 23% higher.
Both Sony and Kadokawa declined to comment, but considering the report is coming from Reuters, we expect to hear a confirmation of the news in due course.
Kadokawa Corporation will be a strong addition to Sony Group with its anime and manga portfolio alongside video games. FromSoftware potentially becoming a PlayStation studio will be the cherry on top.
