FromSoftware parent company Kadokawa Corporation has officially confirmed reports of an acquisition offer from Sony Group. Reuters broke the news of a potential deal yesterday, following which both Kadokawa’s and Sony’s stocks went up. However, Kadokawa has said that it has yet to make a decision.
There’s a lot more to Sony’s potential acquisition of Kadokawa than FromSoftware
In a rare press release addressing the rumors yesterday, Kadokawa said that it receivied an “initial letter of intent” from Sony to acquire the company’s shares. “No decision has been made at this time,” the statement reads. “If there are any facts that should be announced in the future, we will make an announcement in a timely and appropriate manner.”
All headlines reporting Kadokawa’s acquisition — including our own — highlighted FromSoftware, starting with Reuters’ intial article. However, the offer of acquisition has been made by Sony Group, not Sony Interactive Entertainment, which has a wider interest in Kadokawa’s numerous non-gaming IP.
Sony has been expanding its anime and manga business, and Kadokawa has a lot more to offer on that front. In the gaming department, the company also owns Acquire Corp. and Danganronpa studio Spike Chunsoft (under Dwango), among others.
According to Reuters, a deal could be closed within the next few weeks.
