New PlayStation Webpage Launched to Celebrate 30th Anniversary

Sony has launched a new webpage dedicated to PlayStation’s 30th anniversary, and it’s worth checking out because it contains interesting tidbits of information. The webpage contains a timeline of events that chronicle 30 years of PlayStation.

One of the biggest highlights of PlayStation’s history is the PS2. For the first time, Sony has officially confirmed that the console sold 160 million units — a figure that was heavily disputed in gaming circles when former executive Jim Ryan mentioned it in a casual conversation on the PlayStation Podcast.

There is a section dedicated to every PlayStation console ever released, which also display some rather amusing advertisements from days of yore, like the one pictured above, and the original DualShock advertisement that disses other controllers.

A surprise appearance on the webpage is PlayStation Stars — an oft criticized loyalty program that breaks more often than it works. “The service continues to evolve alongside PlayStation,” Sony wrote.

Elsewhere, the webpage makes one realize how the PSP was ahead of its time. The handheld, which could play movies and MP3 music alongside video games, sold over 80 million units and came with an array of online features including wi-fi and ad-hoc PSP-to-PSP connectivity for local multiplayer gaming.
