PS5 system software update

New PS5 Feature Update Released and It’s a Blast From the Past

Sony has rolled out a surprise PS5 feature update to mark PlayStation’s 30th anniversary, and it’s one of the best updates we’ve received in this generation. Unfortunately, it’s a limited-time update for reasons beyond our understanding. Read on to find out what the update does if you don’t care about the surprise being spoiled.

What does December 2024’s PS5 feature update do?

When you log into your PS5 today, you’ll be prompted to download a new feature update. If you don’t receive the prompt, go to Settings > System > System Software > System Features Update. Once done, make sure to restart for the good stuff.

Players will be welcomed back with the original PlayStation boot sequence. What’s more, we can customize various parts of the UI to look like they are from the previous generations, including PS1, PS2, PS3, and PS4. And yes, the update includes themes and sounds, so it wasn’t all that hard for Sony to bring themes back after all!

We have no idea why Sony has decided to make this a limited-time feature, and we can only hope and pray that sanity prevails. While we’d like to have proper themes back on the PS5, something is better than nothing. And we’re not the only ones who feel that way.

Players who are just discovering the update are already pleading with Sony to make the new PS5 feature update permanent. We hope that the company listens and will keep our fingers crossed.
