PlayStation Celebrates 30th Anniversary With Flashy Vegas Sphere Ad

This year marks PlayStation’s 30th anniversary. Sony has been celebrating its impressive milestone in a variety of ways. From PS1 themed DualSense controllers to its odd Shapes of Play toys, Sony has been getting creative with how they are commemorating their achievement. To close out the year, the company is going out with a bang with its flashy (and probably expensive) Sphere ad in Las Vegas.

PlayStation really going all out to celebrate its 30th anniversary.

From an official PlayStation X (formerly Twitter) post, the new ad sees Astro Bot take center stage on the Las Vegas Sphere. Alongside the mascot is several of their friends dancing with and around various PlayStation accessories like the DualSense, as well as the PS5 console itself. The end sees Astro Bot’s head taking up the entirety of the screen, and inevitably blinking out.

Additionally, for those wondering why the Sphere looks like a basketball in the beginning, it’s because the NBA Cup Finals with the Milwaukee Bucks and Oklahoma City Thunder were held there.

The ad itself doesn’t really share any new information. It really is just Sony closing out its PlayStation 30th anniversary celebration as the year ends. If there is anything to take away from the Sphere ad, it’s that Sony is comfortable with Astro Bot being its new mascot. The 2024 game starring the titular character is a celebration of the console platform, so it makes sense that the cute little robot would be positioned as the face of the brand.

Sony announced some of its PlayStation 30th anniversary plans back in September. Beginning with the release of Astro Bot, the console brand has found interesting ways to celebrate the milestone. This includes the PS1 themed PS5 consoles and accessories, the new My First Gran Turismo trial, and making fan-favorite soundtracks available on Spotify. They even introduced limited-time themes, a feature players have been begging for since the console launched.
