Some interesting new PS Portal gameplay statistics shared by Sony have proven naysayers wrong yet again. Against a backdrop of criticisms and skepticism about the remote player, the company argued that the PS Portal was mainly designed to expand players’ engagement with the PS5. And as disclosed in a fresh interview with GameFile, the handheld has achieved exactly that.
PS Portal expands PS5 gameplay hours, especially around 9 p.m.
Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Hiromi Wakai told GameFile’s Stephen Totilo that PS Portal’s usage peaks around 9 p.m. — an hour later than PS5’s peak hour. The company thinks that instead of having to switch off their TVs or relinquishing control of them, players simply continue gaming on the remote player, thus increasing user engagement with the PS5 as intended.
“Players who own a PS Portal tend to spend more time playing games than those who don’t,” Wakai added. “Of course, it’s likely that users who purchase PS Portal were naturally more engaged in the first place, however, our data shows that PS Portal owners tend to spend more time playing games compared to non-owners.”
Sony previously said that the PS Portal has been a “huge” commercial success. Rumor has it that PS Portal sales have renewed the company’s interest in a portable console.
